Learn sailing and boating skills at SailTime Hobart

SailTime Hobart Sailing School due to open summer 2011

Sailtime Hobart provides a full range of training to both new and existing members. We can provide a number of YA courses. Additionally, we provide a number of experience days that will help you brush up on certain skills - whether you are a complete novice or an experienced sailor, SailTime has a training solution for you.

To enable you as a member or owner-member to sail alone and unassisted we require you to have reached the YA Inshore Skipper qualification (theory and practical). We strongly believe that this standard is the minimum that will enable you to feel confident in handling the boat and to enjoy your sailing with family and friends.

The ensuing professionalism of your sailing also helps to avoid unnecessary boating incidents that might otherwise result in the damage of the boat, spoiling the enjoyment of the SailTime experience for you and for others. Also, the owner-member knows that their boat is being sailed by select and competent members who undoubtedly will become seafaring friends.

Whilst you are working towards your YA Inshore Skipper qualification you can, of course, still sail. However, it is a requirement that you have onboard someone, guest or instructor, of Inshore Skipper standard or higher.

One of the benefits of SailTime is that you are able to use your sailing time to enjoy instruction on your own yacht rather than in a group situation onboard a basic and unfamiliar sailing school training boat.

Through one of the affiliated YA sailing schools we are able to provide you with professional quality training on your yacht to help you become a more confident skipper, regardless of your initial standard. Our programme gives you the flexibility to have a Sailing Instructor or Yachtmaster Instructor onboard for one-to-one tuition, group tuition, or simply as a companion to help build your confidence on a new boat.

Sailing courses offered by the SailTime Hobart

Introductory Course

The syllabus for the Introductory Certificate is intended for completion over the period of one full days sailing. It is an introduction to sailing and to working aboard a sailing yacht in sheltered waters.

Duration 1 full day $300

• Working the Sheet

• Points of sail

YA Competent Crew Course

This course is for those who would like to become active crew members. By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, basic navigation ,keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the routines onboard.

Duration: 2 days / one night   $495

YA Inshore Skipper Theory  Course

The YA Inshore Skipper  theory  course provides you with the following skills:

• Stability of a vessel and security and safety of passengers and crew.
• Navigation, including the use of nautical charts, using chart plotting instruments, taking hand compass bearings, proper siting of compasses, determining your position, using tide tables and predicting tidal currents, visual aids to navigation, planning a passage, navigating when visibility is restricted.
• Weather analysis for planning your sail and what to do in adverse weather situations.

You should already have a basic knowledge of navigation and helmsmanship. It is advisable that you take the Inshore Skipper thoery course before attending the practical course and it is recommended that you have already sailed with others for 5 days, 100 miles, including 4 night hours onboard a boat.

Duration: 1days  $300

YA Inshore Skipper Practical Course

The YA Inshore Skipper  practical course provides you with the skills needed to pilot a boat, understand boat handling and get a basic understanding of seamanship and navigation.

You should already have a basic knowledge of navigation and helmsmanship. It is advisable that you take the Inshore Skipper shore-based course before attending this practical course and it is recommended that you have already sailed with others for 5 days, 100 miles, including 4 night hours onboard a boat.

Duration: 2 days / 2 nights   $695

Short courses

In addition to the YA courses, there are a number of 'improve/ refresh your skills'  training programs. These provide great opportunity to sharpen your skills. Ranging from Man Over Board, Sail Trimming, Mooring techniques, Anchoring, Night Sailing, navigation or just mile building, there is something for all experience levels of sailor to benefit from.

Places to Go

History

The area was first explored by Bruni D'Entrecasteaux in 1792 and was settled in the early 1800s by timber cutters, whalers and sealers. Life was hard and the people who lived in the area rarely settled for long preferring the life in Hobart Town to the whaling stations and logging camps.

Today

Today the area is noted for its orchards (apples, cherries, pears) and Kettering has become an important service centre for the local farmers. Like so much of the area south of Hobart, both towns have become centres for commuters and alternative lifestyle dwellers who find the peacefulness suits them.

These tiny settlements are now the focus of marine activities. Kettering is the centre for fishing in the region. It has two major marinas, South Haven Marina and Oyster Cove Marina, as well as many smaller, privately owned jetties. Approximately 400 boats are located in Kettering whether on moorings or in marinas. The Bruny Island Ferry, Mirambeena, runs from Kettering numerous times a day.

Kettering has a thriving community involved in many artistic pursuits. There are many artists and crafts people living in Kettering and the Southern Channel. 2008 saw a local production of Under Milk Wood, presented as a radio play in the local Community Hall which was very successful. It also was at the centre of the Art Trail an event which included 3 exhibitions and 9 artists' studios opened to the public. The local Kettering Music Group have been organising 2 or 3 Chamber Music concerts Music concerts and a Jazz concert in July Jazz concert since 2004. The next Art Trail is planned for August 2010.

The Kettering and Oyster Cove Residents Group (KOCRES) is actively involved in a variety of community projects including the establishment of a community website.

You know – where everything seems utterly perfect…lovely rolling hills, calm waters, flowers and trees everywhere…. Welcome to Kettering, 37 kms south of Hobart, nestled on the picturesque D'Entrecasteaux Channel and host to SailTime Hobart.

The centre for fishing in the region, Kettering has two major marinas, South Haven and Oyster Cove, as well as many smaller, privately owned jetties. Approximately 400 boats are located in Kettering on moorings or in the marinas. The best way to experience the d’Entrecasteaux Channel is on it. One destination well worth taking is an eco-cruise to Bruny Island, where you can ride beneath Australia’s highest sea cliffs, enter deep sea caves, and photograph the island’s wildlife. Be equally inspired by the scenery at Cygnet , moor and picnic at beautiful Barnes Bay or explore the vibrant heart and timeless charm of the harbour capital of Hobart.

Things to see

Marine Studies Centre The Commonwealth Government has established a Marine Studies Centre at Woodbridge (it is down on the water near the town jetty) which is specifically designed to cater for school children interested in marine biology and Kettering, with its Marina and its regular ferry service to Bruny Island, is becoming an important tourist mooring and departure point.

Woodbridge Hill Travellers wanting a short cut across to the Huon Valley can take the C627 and C626 through the mountains behind Woodbridge and Kettering. The C627 passes through the Woodbridge Hill area, a 400 ha park characterised by rainforest vegetation and the presence of the rare Bell Everlasting. Woodbridge Hill, which rises 580 m above sea level, is part of the mountain range which runs between the D'Entrecasteaux Channel and the Huon River.

Oyster Cove Inn The Oyster Cove Inn, which has views across the Kettering Marina, is one of those strange anomalies. It was originally built by a wealthy Queensland grazier who, presumably, preferred the cool tranquillity of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel to the heat of his own state.
