Learn sailing and boating skills at SailTime Moreton Bay

SailTime Moreton Bay Sailing School due to open summer 2011

Sailtime Moreton Bay provides a full range of training to both new and existing members. We can provide a number of YA courses. Additionally, we provide a number of experience days that will help you brush up on certain skills – whether you are a complete novice or an experienced sailor, SailTime has a training solution for you.

To enable you as a member or owner-member to sail alone and unassisted we require you to have reached the YA Inshore Skipper qualification (theory and practical). We strongly believe that this standard is the minimum that will enable you to feel confident in handling the boat and to enjoy your sailing with family and friends.

The ensuing professionalism of your sailing also helps to avoid unnecessary boating incidents that might otherwise result in the damage of the boat, spoiling the enjoyment of the SailTime experience for you and for others. Also, the owner-member knows that their boat is being sailed by select and competent members who undoubtedly will become seafaring friends.

Whilst you are working towards your YA Inshore Skipper qualification you can, of course, still sail. However, it is a requirement that you have onboard someone, guest or instructor, of Inshore Skipper standard or higher.

One of the benefits of SailTime is that you are able to use your sailing time to enjoy instruction on your own yacht rather than in a group situation onboard a basic and unfamiliar sailing school training boat.

Through one of the affiliated YA sailing schools we are able to provide you with professional quality training on your yacht to help you become a more confident skipper, regardless of your initial standard. Our programme gives you the flexibility to have a Sailing Instructor or Yachtmaster Instructor onboard for one-to-one tuition, group tuition, or simply as a companion to help build your confidence on a new boat.

Sailing out of Manly gives you the opportunity to see one of the great natural wonders of living in South East Queensland.  Surprisingly, many even long term residents of Brisbane don’t appreciate the beauty, charm, tranquillity and at times excitement, of sailing out of Manly, on to Moreton Bay even though it is only 25 minutes from the CBD.

With dozens of wonderful anchorages, ranging from the beautiful sandy beaches of Moreton Island (and seeing the Humpback whales as they migrate), going to another island or just going for a sail with your important guests, clients or friends, it’s an experience you and your guests won’t forget.  Some of our clients for skippered chartered days want to have team building as core activity for the day…but even then there is always a fun element.  We can provide both!

Half Day Charter Suggested Itinerary

Meet your Skipper at Raby Bay at 9.30 am or 1.30 pm.  After the crew safety briefing and boat orientation, sail to Horseshoe Bay, Bird Island or the One Mile, depending on the weather conditions.  Go for a swim or walk ashore, lunch and sail back to the harbour for return to the city (train, bus, taxi or private vehicle) having seen the beauties of the bay, a chance encounter with some dolphins, dugongs or even humpback whales in the season. Whatever the weather, you and your guests will have had a day to remember.

Twilight Charter Itinerary Suggestions

Meet your Skipper at Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club at 2.30 pm and after a crew safety briefing and boat orientation sail out between Green and Saint Helena Island (the convict settlement of Moreton Bay run by the ruthless Captain Logan), back between the southern end of Green Island and the northern end of King Island, back to Manly and the Club House for a drink and maybe even dinner overlooking the bay.

Full Day Skippered Charter Itinerary

Meet your Skipper at either Manly Harbour or Raby Bay at 9.30 am and after a crew safety briefing and boat orientation set sail either for:-

§     The Sand Hills at Moreton Island;

§     Myora;

§     Horseshoe Bay;

§     the Lazarette;

§     Bird Island;

§     The One Mile;

§     Blakesleys;

§     or even Tangalooma (additional fees may apply).

The important thing is that your Skipper will know what is best in terms of the weather and your needs and the “action” you want.  Some clients even prefer simply to go sailing and “learn the ropes”.  Some even want to go for a sail and then participate in a WAGS race – a Wednesday afternoon sail run out of Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, to test their skills after their initial training and experience during the day.  This can be great fun, especially after a morning of practice followed by a pleasant lunch in behind Green Island or even back in the harbour at one of the restaurants or the Club.

Either way, as the day comes to an end, it is time to drop the sails and put the boat back in the marina berth and remember just how much better that day was than sitting at your desk in your office!

Places to Go

Moreton Bay has dozens of islands.  Most of them have a number of anchorages, ensuring that no matter what the weather, you will always find a wonderful anchorage after a great sail.

From simply enjoying a sail out on the bay…for the simple pleasure of sailing a beautiful, luxury yacht on the bay, to getting to your desired anchorage for a picnic with a peaceful BBQ, a glass of wine and walk on the beach…the opportunities are many and varied.

Manly is about 25 minutes from the CBD.  For those in the eastern suburbs and on the south side it is a quick and simple trip and, for those on the north side, the Gateway Expressway almost delivers you straight to the door!

Manly has everything you need in terms of catering, restaurants, shopping, bay side walks and exercise, views and put simply, a relaxed lifestyle separate from the busy city life.

Try the beautiful anchorage and beach behind the famous Tangalooma wrecks and have a drink at the Tangalooma Island Resort. Or try Lucinda Bay or the Sandhills anchorages just a few miles south on Moreton Island…… you’re almost guaranteed a feed of whiting all year round. And, if it’s whale season, you might just be in for some awesome displays!

Then there’s the peace and tranquility of Myora, with its freshwater spring or the One Mile, a quiet anchorage a little further south on North Stradbroke Island or Deanbilla Bay, both with a ferry service where friends can come and go for a day trip. You can then hop over to the fabulous beach at Horeshoe Bay for a swim or if it’s a bit windy from the south, have a spell in the tranquility of the Lazaret, just around the corner.

For those with a bit more time, an hour or so south there’s Canaipa Point at the top end of Russell Island or explore Lamb, Karragarra and McLeay Islands…all with their own stories to tell and again with fast ferry services for friends to visit you for that special day out on the bay.
